‘Moon Man’ Holds Off ‘Warriors of Future’ on Another Strong China Box Office Weekend
China’s sci-fi comedy Moon Man excels at the box office in mainland China, but has a low trajectory. After 10 days in theaters, the cumulative gross is just under $300 million and is outpacing the sci-fi action reboot, Warriors of Future. Solid numbers have been recorded although some cinemas remain closed in major cities and others are still experiencing capacity constraints.
Hainan Island was closed over the weekend following a flurry of COVID cases. According to calculations by consulting firm Artisan Gateway, the weekend gross was $91.8 million, bringing the annual domestic box office to $3.3 billion. The deficit has shrunk to 30% from 2021.
